New Laptop & Printer!

A few months back, Bob said he wanted to get a new desktop to replace the 5 year old one in our study room. I told him why don't we (actually he) get a laptop instead. I'm the one using the desktop most of the time but I actually prefer if I can have some mobility instead of being confined to the study whenever I need to surf the net or do some scrapbooking/graphical work.

On Monday, he brought back a new Lenovo laptop. He got a colleague to buy the laptop from Malaysia. The next day, I found out the PC show 2007 starts on Thurday and I ask him why didn't he get it from there instead. But I'll come to that later.

I've been wanting to get a photo printer myself. The last IT show in March, fellow scrapbookers mentioned in the forum of the good deals they got from the IT show and since then, I've been waiting for the PC show in June to get my hands on the printer, praying that I can get the same good deals as them. On top of that, I wanted to get a graphic tablet as well as a mini optical mouse for the new laptop.

So this afternoon, I went to the PC show.

As expected, it was very crowded!

I managed to get the Epson printer, a set of ink cartridges, 2 packs of semi gloss photo paper, 1 really cute mini optical mouse and 1 spindle of printable DVD roms. Spent quite a bit, but was really happy to have finally got the printer.

Oh, back to the laptop. Bob bought the laptop from Malaysia and after conversion to Singapore dollars, he only paid S$1,100. And just now I went to the PC show, Lenovo booth was selling the same model at $1,599! Imagine the amount of money he saved! And imagine his proud face when I told him about it! One thing about the laptop that I'm really frustrated about is the "invisible" touch pad. Meaning to say, the touch pad, unlike the normal visible pad of black, is incorporated into the palm rest for a sleek look. But sleek doesn't mean good. Since I need to rest my palm on the palm rest (obviously!), I always accidentally brushed my hand on the touch pad and it either moved the cursor to another line of words while I'm typing halfway, or like what had happened just now, I published the post even though I'm not done with the typing. It really gets on my nerves! Other than that, I don't have any other complaints, yet! But one thing I noticed is the graphics, I realised my pictures actually look so much nicer on this laptop screen as compared to my good old LCD monitor.

And on my printer! The R270 uses ink technology that allows prints to last for 200 years and for a scrapbooker, it just makes sense that I should own one. I mean, what's the point of spending a fortune on acid-free papers and embellishments but using a photo that doesn't last as long? Maybe after 50 years, the scrap pages will still look as new, but the photos have already faded? It won't complete the "story" I meant to tell through the scrap pages I painstakingly made, right? After discussing with my fellow scrapbookers friends on the forum, I've decided to get this Epson R270. Actually I also wanted a printer that print better quality photos. The HP all-in-one printer that I have just doesn't print the right shade of colours. Since then, I've been set on getting a printer that prints photos in fabulous colours! So far, my fellow scrapbooker friends have all said they have no regrets getting this printer. I can't say yet, since the printer is still strapped onto the trolley in my hall now, I guess I will only set up the printer this weekend. I can't wait to print my first photo!

And at the PC show just now, I had a really frustrating encounter. I had to buy a set of ink cartridges for my new printer but I have to queue at a separate counter to make my purchase. And there are only 2 cashiers, one is for cash/nets and the other is for visa. I got a young boy to get me the set of inks and I went on to queue. And guess what, I actually stood at the same spot for at least 15 mins! The line did not move an inch! The stuffy air and shoving crowd worsen it further. I also realised that my full set of ink should consist of 6 cartridges instead of the 4 that the young boy gave to me, so I asked him about it, he told me there are only 4. Not convinced at all, since I remembered someone told me there were 6, I checked with another young girl, and guess what, she had to read the brochure I was holding to confirm that there are indeed 6 cartridges! I mean, she was wearing an Epson t-shirt so she has to at least know her products better that the young boy donned in Harvey Norman tee, right? The young boy saw me talking to the young girl, came up to me and further insisted there are only 4 cartridges, and he only saw 4!

By this time, the queue had started moving and I was standing just beside the shelves of cartridges. I read my brochure and found that I'm short of a light cyan and light magenta ink. Straining my eyes, I saw 2 full rows of both inks on the rack! I'm not going to leave the queue after having been in it for 20 mins. So I quickly got the young girl to take for me. And you know what young girl said? She passed me the inks and asked me am I SURE those are the correct ones. Oh hello, is she sure she's from Epson! This incident just further added fuel to already burning coals.

Slowly, I got nearer and nearer to the cashier and I realised the reason for the slow moving queue. The computer was down and staff had to do everything manually. Which means writing cash receipts by hand. Then this young girl was going down the queue taking the cartridges from us to "write down the price". I thought she was helping to write the cash receipts, but no! She just wrote some prices on the box and handed them back to us. And at the cashier, the lady manning the till had to write the cash receipt herself, causing further delay. Isn't it stupid? Since this young girl was already holding on the cartridges and stuff, why can't she just write the cash receipts at the same time, pack the cartridges into bags and passed the receipts to us for payment? And the cashier just need to process payment. Queue will move faster and customers will be happier! All in all, I queued for half an hour or 40 mins at least! It's such a waste of time! Even afterwards, 3 staff helped out in writing the receipts, it did nothing to appease my anger. But I just kept quiet of course lah, showing my blackest face and only rant and rave afterwards.
Hah.. Enough of ranting. I'm just glad that I finally got everything I've wished for. And that makes me happy at the end of the day. Besides, I've finally got to surf the net in the comfort of my bed, and I get to watch over Tara while she slept, as well as watch TV at the same time. So convenient! So contented!

不要擦这个!

On Saturday night, Tara saw me painting my nails and said she wanted hers painted too. So I obliged and painted only her toe nails. But she saw me painting my finger nails and said she wanted to paint her finger nails too.

So I told her, sure, I will paint for her, but once her nails are painted, she cannot suck her thumb anymore. We are trying to wean her off so I thought this is a good chance she might just listen and stop sucking her thumb altogether.

The little one pondered for a few seconds, pointed her thumb at me and said:

"不要擦这个!"

Smart lass!

Amy is 28!

Yep yep, I turned 28 last Tuesday.

My colleague had a birthday cake surprise-delivered to my office, shared scrapbook vouchers with another colleague. Bob brought me out for dinner at one of my favourite restaurant, bluffing me that he had no plans for dinner venue when he picked me up, but told the waitress that he had a reservation at 7pm when we reached. There, I had my favourite borsch soup, oysters and escargots. Bob told me my birthday gift will be the air ticket to Bangkok in July. Yeah, that's just Bob. He will conveniently pay for the recent purchase that I made and announced that it's my gift for whatever upcoming occasion. I have no complaints though, because it kind of save me money on stuff that I've budgeted for, but need not spend on.

My gang gave me craft vouchers, which got me super ecstatic. My ex-colleagues celebrated my birthday with a yummy-licious dinner, surprised me with a slice of chocolate cake with a lighted candle and further surprised me with a crystal gift, which one of the ex-colleague, who was never part of this group (we celebrate each other birthdays, meet up on CNY and Xmas), couldn't turn up in time after he said he wanted to join us.

I got ang bao from Mum and surprise, surprise, ang bao from my dear bro. Not much but the thought alone weighed tons!

And my Sis promised to buy me something that I wouldn't have spent on. A photo storage box that will soon be in stock at Laine's. And she made me a gorgeous paint bottle holder, which I absolutely adore!

And I've bought myself quite a bit of scrapbook stuff over the month, that it just seem like my birthday every other day.

One of my happiest birthday ever.

Photos!

My birthday cake, which I cut in the pantry. No one knew it was my birthday and no one wanted to take the cake either, since it was just after lunch when I distributed. My bad.

Two out of a dozen left, before I remembered to take pictures.

Same, two out of a dozen left.

My favourite borsch soup! This photo doesn't do justice but I can tell you the soup is yummy-licious!

The very cute holder that my Sis painstakingly made for me. Thanks Sis! You're the best lah!

Blink Clover Pin from Swarovski. The surprise gift from that not-in-the-usual-gang ex-colleague. Erm, the real actually looks smaller, cuter and definitely prettier.

And I started my day with an early breakfast at the MacDonald's near my workplace and bought a gift for myself.

A pair of Shrek ears! Pic's a little blur though.

Thanks to my friends, my buddies, my Sis and most importantly, my Bob for making my birthday a memorable one!

Fun Fair @ Made With Love

Actually I started the month of May with quite a bit of luck. One of the local scrapbook stores, Made with Love, held a fun fair on 5th of May. I went with Sis and my little niece, Shermaine, whom I delighted to annouce, has joined the world of scrapbooking! Under the influence of her mummy of course.

We were able to print coupons (it's a fun fair, you see) and use them at the fair. The coupons consisted of discounts for both food and scrapbook supplies, games, free popcorn and ice-cream, free make-and-takes (small projects which comes coordinated. just need to follow the sample, make it on the spot and take them home!)

Both Sis and me were MWL members so we have a set of coupons each. And each coupon comes with a free game at the game stalls and since it's a free coupon, we gave the coupons to Shermaine, who managed to win a little something for herself.

As for me, I got 3 tries at the game stalls, which I was entitled to after spending $50 (using 2 coupons with 15% discount for a single item). I didn't know which game to play, as I'm worried that I will fail badly and get myself in embarrasing situations. But I just have to try, looking at all the yummy prizes that they were giving away. And so, I tried my hand at throwing darts first. I've always sucked at this and thus, I didn't really take aim and just threw all 3 darts. And to my utmost surprise, I managed all 3 darts ONTO the board (which is a first), and got them in just the right positions to win myself an album that costs $40 plus.

And the next game I played, I'm required to match 9 pieces of patterned paper (from a stack of at least 25 papers) within 45 seconds, in the exact position that the game master has laid out. Within approximately 16 seconds, I have matched 8 papers , and the game master told me I just need to match the last paper to win a tote bag worth over $100! Of course, I didn't get the bag as the last paper was at the bottom of the stack and I took some time to find it. It was such a waste! But I did have ample time to check and double-check on the papers. That was really lucky as compared to some other players I've seen, who didn't managed to complete the game within the stipulated timing. And for this game, I won prima flowers worth about $18.

I'm quite happy with my prizes so I gave the last chance to my Sis, she tried the darts but didn't manage to win anything. She later told me I should play all the games since I'm pretty lucky that day. And at the fun fair, I spent about $50 plus and won prizes of over $60. How good is that!!

We had absolute fun at the fair and were really glad we went.

Photos here!

Yours truly doing the make-and-take!

My Sis and Shermaine trying out one of the games.

Stuff I bought at MWL. 15% discount for each. So I only paid $50 plus for stuff that cost $70 plus.

My prizes!!

My loot that day!

After the fun fair, we went to Spotlight, Daiso and another scrapbook store, Laine's Papeterie, where I hoarded more supplies, just so I can get the $38 class voucher. All in all, I spent about $160 that day (including a scrapbook class worth $68), but looking at the stuff I have, fellow scrapbookers will be able to tell that I've got more than I've bargained for!

A good start to the month of May indeed!

Sick, sick, sick..

Everyone's getting sick recently due to the nasty weather. But I think Tara is the worst hit. As said before, she contracted chicken pox and was only back to school for less than 2 weeks, she contracted HFMD. Though a mild case, I felt both diseases affected her immunity greatly and she is so fragile now, she can catch the virus of someone sneezing 10 metres away!

Yeah, kidding.

But after her HFMD, she went back to school last Monday, only to catch another one of those deadly flu virus, and came back on Friday with a fever of almost 39 degrees. I thought she would be able to return to school the following Monday but I was dead wrong. She's currently at home with my MIL taking care of her. The dreaded fever was on and off for 1 whole week! And it just got worse last night. I was outside for a belated birthday dinner and Bob sms-ed and told me Tara's fever shot up to 39 again. This time, I'm worried because Bob said Tara wasn't alert nor active.

I know better now since Tara was admitted to hospital twice before, for high fever. Both times, the nurses told me that high fever in children is not a cause to worry, so long they are still alert and active. But if a child is listless and tired, even a fever of 38 degrees will require immediate medical attention.

As at this morning, Tara was doing pretty well, I heard. But I guess she was quite angry with me for slipping out when she took her afternoon nap (I was on leave), she told me she don't want Mummy, when I insisted that she sit upright when watching TV. She has this bad habit of lying down to watch TV and my MIL actually allowed that! Anyway, Bob told me she was dancing to her favourite Hi-5 when he left for work.

Now I just need to find out if there's any supplements that can boost her immunity. Is there any?

As for myself, I'm not even fully recovered and I find myself falling sick again. Guess the virus is now passing around between Bob, Tara and me. Even Bob is sick now. I kind of dread getting sick because the last time I did, it was pretty bad. My sore throat was so bad, I actually need to take painkillers to stop the pain. Without the painkillers, I can't even talk and eat properly. And I cough so much that speaking a full sentence is impossible for me. I went to this doctor near my parent's place and she gave me a strong antibiotic, that managed to cure my sore throat in only 2 days. To think that I was on painkillers for one week!

As for my cough, it kind of took longer to recover, a week more after my sore throat. And at night, it was almost impossible to sleep in peace. I remembered my colleague forwarded an email about stopping cough by applying Vicks Vaporub on the feet and wearing socks to sleep. It sounded ridiculous at first but having trying out of desperation, I'm glad to say that it works! I was able to sleep through the night. On days when I was lazy to use the vaporub, I would wake up in the mid of the night and cough till dawn break. Vaporub really works!

For now, I just hope that the 3 of us will get well soon. Bob, Tara and me.

Too Caught Up..

This morning, I finally remembered to ask this friend of mine for her blog addy. I've been reading her blog since the day she stepped into blogosphere. Due to the very personal issues that she writes on her blog, I'm not able to tag her in my own blog, so everytime when I want to read, I gotta go to my Favorites folder to get the link to her blog.

But ever since I left my sale job (her blog link was in my old workplace's PC), and had my home PC "cleaned" up, I didn't read get to read her blog again. And I'm so caught up with my own life that I didn't even bothered asking for her blog addy until our recent gathering a couple of days ago.

So this morning, the minute I got the blog addy, I went in and read 9 months worth of entries! I read about her shopping sprees, about her work and about her relationship with HIM. I know of her extremely rocky relationship with HIM but then whenever we tried to talk to her, she seemed quite okay and was even laughing and horsing around the topic, so I never really know she felt so much misery until I read on the entries that I have missed out for 9 whole months.

I felt really bad that I didn't show my care and concern to her. As said, I'm too caught up with my own life. And now, I feel like slapping myself for missing out a large part of her life in the past 9 months. And not being there for her when she was down.

When I read about her sudden tears while waiting at the bus-stop on a cold rainy night, I just feel like I'm the biggest selfish idiot in the whole world. Where was I when she needed someone to talk to? Why didn't I even sms her once in a while to ask how is she? And why didn't I make more effort to meet her and even the rest of the gang more often?

Since the day Tara stepped into childcare, I've been really tied up. And Bob was travelling pretty often since beginning of the year and he would be out of town for a week, come home for a week before he flew off to some other places again. He wasn't in town 50% of the time so the other 50%, I was catching up on lost time and committed most of my free time to him, and the rest to catch up on some "ME" time. I know that these are all lousy excuses to neglect my friends. Frankly, if you ask me what actually have I done the past 5 months, I can't tell you either. This year pass by in a flash, and in another week, we are coming to the mid of the year!

Dear friend(s), since we live so near to each other, shall we just make more effort to meet up at least once/twice a month? I promise I'll be there everytime. And please tell me how you getting on first, before I start shooting my mouth. Cos you all know, once I start talking, it's difficult to make me stop. Hahaha..

Sushi Class & Black Pig Dinner

I attended a sushi class last night with my colleague and her friend. They actually intended to join some baking class but in the end, joined me in the sushi class instead.

The class was held in the Civil Service Club at Tessensohn Road. I had thought that I will be going to a hands-on class and was surprised to step into a classroom style setting. There was only a table top for the chef to do his teaching. And the next surprising thing, there were almost 30 of us in the class. And there is this big mirror hanging on the wall and tilted in an angle which enable us to see the countertop, 2 smallers ones by the side which let us see the stove.

See the panel of mirror above the chef?
The chef was a plump guy, who apparently has loads of experience cooking for the prestigous people on private yachts. Not just Japanese cuisine, he was also good in Italian, American, Epicurean cuisines as well. I think he's quite a good instructor, clear with his instructions , and he actually managed to inject some mild humor in his teaching so at least, it's not boring.
We were taught to make 3 types of sushi. The traditional Futomaki, and 2 others which I can't remember the name. All 3 types of sushi seems pretty easy to cook and tasted delicious. Oh yah, we have the chance to taste the sushi. And the chef even did a couple display ones for us to take pictures. And since I'm always armed with a camera, I thought I should take the chance to use it.
The traditional futomaki roll.

The non traditional deep fried sushi roll, topped with avocado
and crab meat. This is yummy!
And the last one is seared tuna. And this is absolutely divine.
The one thing I like about this class is the chef did not teach us some boring sushi pieces. It's my first time attending a culinary class and I totally loved it. The chef also hold classes for other cuisines, and my next target is the steaks & chops class, in which he will teach how to cook pumpkin soup, gratinated potatoes and sirloin steak with 2 toppings.
I might just get hooked on this culinary class thingy.
And on the black pig.
I had my first taste of black pig when I was in Korea for my honeymoon. And it's one experience I can't forget. Prior to that, beef is on top of my list of the tastiest meat until I tried the black pig meat. Even yummy cannot describe how good the meat is. Since then, I've been yearning for the chance to eat it again.

So when my colleague told me there is this Japanese restaurant in Central that has black pig meat on their menu, I literally went hysterical with happiness. We had our dinner there yesterday, before we went for the sushi class, and I ordered this:
I had wanted to order a Sukiyaki pot but I was so tempted to try this deep fried one. I even top up 5 buck for a top grade meat. My verdict, the meat was very soft and tasty but because it's deep fried, I felt kind of yucky after eating 3/4 of the cutlet. My colleague's friend ordered the Sukiyaki pot. I tasted a little and was totally regreting my choice of dish. And the miso soup they served is full of ingredients and was absolutely delicious!
For lunch, they do have this special offer of $18.80+++ per set of a different menu that is not available in the dinner menu. And I've already made arrangement with my colleague to have our lunch there sometime soon. This is a must try restaurant.

Maternal Love

Some time back, Tara found a baby doll at my Sis place. The baby belonged to my niece and it looked abandoned and Shermaine no longer play with it, so my Sis gave it to Tara. Even though baby does not have any clothes on and it's a little dirty, Tara doesn't seem to mind. She love baby to bits.

Almost everyday, she can be seen "taking care" of her baby. Feeding, hugging it to sleep, talking and singing to it. The baby has a dirty right foot and she even attempted to wash it clean. She absolutely enjoyed taking care of baby. Sometimes, she even insisted in bringing baby whenever we go out. It was all so sweet.

And recently, she went into role playing. She will be the mummy and baby will be, oh well, her baby. Tara will tell baby that mummy is going to work and she will do all the kissing and hugging , which was what we usually did when we go to work ourselves, said bye bye to baby and trot off to "work". She even tell baby not to cry and to behave. Though it's really cute to see her taking care of baby, the role playing is a little too much for me. Somehow it makes me feel my little girl is growing up fast, too fast, in fact.

Since Tara loved to take care of baby so much, Bob decided to get a baby of her own. Well, baby #1 didn't actually belong to Tara anyway. So on Saturday, we were at Suntec City after watching Spiderman and off we went to Toys R Us so Tara can choose her own baby.

She didn't get really excited, nor was she ecstatic when we stepped into the rows of shelves where many babies were displayed. We told her to choose one, and she didn't rush into her decision either. Tara took a while to decide and eventually I had to help her make her decision and I picked this out for her.

It comes with feeding utensils and a cute backpack where she can strap the baby, just like those carriers which we strap our real babies. I thought this is the perfect set, since she loved to feed baby and bring her out.

I didn't go home together with Bob and Tara that day when we got baby #2 cos I went to Sis' place to scrap. But I heard from Bob the minute Tara reach home, she immediately took out baby from the box and played with it. That night when I went home, she was already asleep with both baby #1 and #2 by her side. Even though she got a new, clean and fully dressed baby #2, she did not forsake baby #1 and I thought that was so sweet.

Yesterday, Bob brought Tara to his aunt's place for dinner. The little one looked so cute with the pink back pack and baby #2 strapped on it. Bob told me on the way back, he asked Tara what was the name of baby #2 and she told him. And when they came home, Bob told me to ask Tara what was the name she gave baby and Tara said "Xiao Shui" (小睡). She even gave a name to baby!

I think her maternity instinct kicked in much too early!

My MiMi Tote!

Some time back, I wrote a post on how I wish I can own a MiMi tote and finally, my dream came true!

Bob's boss and colleague went to US 2 weeks ago and I arranged with an online shop to send it to the hotel so they can bring it back for me. Not only the travelmate tote, I also bought a Tote-ally cool tote from AMM, and the poor guys have to handcarry back for me, cos both items are too big for their luggage.

Really grateful for their help! And because of them, I'm a deliriously happy owner of a pink and brown MiMi tote!!

Bob brought it back home last night and when I saw them, I just can't stop smiling. After I put Tara to bed, I crept out of the bedroom and start arranging my stuff into the tote!

And of course I have to "stamp" my ownership on the bag so I made 2 tags just now.

I'm a very happy woman!

On Sick Leave.. Again!

I haven't recovered from my cough, and it just got worse and worse. I cough so much these 2 days that I thought I might just cough out my lungs one day.

Actually just now, we brought Tara to see Kelly and check if she's okay to go back to school. Tara is totally okay now, just that Kelly felt she should stay home till end of the week just to keep the disease contained.

And since we were there, I ask Kelly for a stronger cough medicine cos the excessive coughing is taking toll on my lungs and throat. There's always this itchiness deep in my throat that can't seem to go away, and never fail to trigger an endless bout of coughing.

And since I'm there, Kelly decided to do a check on me and found that I've got phlegm stuck in my throat, the insides of my nasal were swollen, and I'm running a low grade fever. In the end, instead of getting Tara checked out, I'm the one leaving the clinic with 5 types of medicine and an MC for tomorrow.

I know it's bad to keep taking medical leave from work. Just hope that the rest I get tomorrow will instantly cure me (yeah, I hope) and I'll be fresh at work on Thursday!

Now I'm just waiting for the strong cocktail of medicine to kick in, so I can have an undisturbed rest tonight. Yeah, the coughing is keeping me, and not only me, awake at night. Terrible.

Sick and Grounded

I'm on sick leave today. Last night, my fever was as high as 39 degrees. Haven't had a high fever for so long. I felt really weak and totally exhausted. Every part of my joint screamed pain when I move. I didn't managed to get a good night's sleep cos I just feel so uncomfortable.

Tara is sick too. She has a confirmed mild case of HFMD. Since she started school in Jan this year, she had been sick countless times. Fever, cough, running nose. Even chicken pox, which she just recovered from recently. But the good thing is, she is still very alert and active. Even though she has ulcers in her mouth, she has a really hearty appetite.

Guess it's just the disadvantage of going to child care at such a young age, but we have no choice. Most parents would have pulled their kids out of the childcare but for Tara, I can't do that. There's no one to take care of her. I'm just glad my PILs are around so Bob and I do not have to take leave. Now I just hope all these episodes will strengthen Tara's immunity. Tara loves school nowadays, so much so that when we said she can't go to school, she will give us a sad little face and whined that she wants to go school.

At about 9 plus last night, my temperature was about 37.8 whereas Tara's was 38.2. The little girl was so active, jumping on the bed, blabbering non-stop, whereas I was half dead, lying on the bed, wearing my sweater, and shivering under my thick quilt covers. Tara was so active and I thought I should feel ashame, for behaving so sick when my fever wasn't even as high as hers. Ah well, the difference in age, I guess.

I feel like going out. But I guess it's a wiser choice to take a nap now, especially since Tara has someone to take care of her. Maybe if tonight I don't feel so weak, I will get Bob to drive me to Jurong Point to grab some stuff.

Argh, hate being grounded.
